My word. Now I know I may well make mistakes on this blog. I may throw in a comma where it is unnecessary. I may spell the occasional word wrong. What can I say, it doesn't do spell check on here. However I just picked up a book called 'Eats, Shoots and Leaves' by Lynne Truss, and I have confirmed my suspicion that I am a stickler and I do get riled when I see spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. So whilst browsing for Dave Eggers reviews I found a monstrosity which I've reproduced (probably entirely illegally) from Amazon. Its a review by an American guy of 'A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius' by Dave Eggers (a book I thoroughly enjoyed). Here it is in all its grammatical and down-right confusing glory:
"I only finished this book because I infested a couple of bucks for it on-line. Pretty boring and self serving. I was appauled in how insensatively he handled his mother's illness, tongue and cheek? he tried too hard to be funny...I didn't get the humor. And some wierd touchy feely relationship with his younger brother, that bothered me. Don't waste your time and money...read Augusten Burroughs's "Running with Scissors" instead, far better read."
infested (!) appauled(!) insensatively(!) tongue and check? he tried (!) Humor (!) (fucking Americans) brother, that bothered me(!)
I don't like to pass judgement so easily, but I think it's fair to say this man is illiterate, unsophistocated and essentially a moron. And perhaps it's fair to say I am a pretentious, sarcastic, clever-dick. Well I've come to accept that. Have you?
