Hack

So I’ve been writing reviews. Yep, there they are in all their glory. Mars Volta gets a face creaming. Arcade Fire gets full sex and Jack Johnson gets a slap in the face for even asking.

I get sent free stuff in exchange for my opinion. Not a bad job really. Especially when you get things you actually like. As well as the prestige of publishing them on here, they get published on ContactMusic.com (link on the right). However, I get no money. Maybe one day I will.

Writing music criticism is a tricky thing to do. It’s quite time consuming for a start. Whenever I read reviews on Pitchfork for example, I’m often struck by the amount of thought that’s gone into them. They generally do their research and give you quotes and a considered response. Even Mars Volta’s 2/10 review is well-written. So fair play. What then is the point in me rehashing the same press released details about an album? I don’t know how many people will actually carefully read my review in mind of buying that album. And if they do, chances are they’ll read the terribly written opinions on Amazon.com first so what does my opinion count for?
